The Great Escape Lyrics

I can understand how the edges are rough
And they cut you like the tiny slivers of glass
And you feel too much
And you don't know how long you're gonna last

But everyone you know is trying to smooth it over
Find a way to make the hurt go...

In this song, P!nk talks about suicide: "The great escape", meaning the escape from life. She says: "I can understand how when the edges are rough...". P!nk knows how is the pain of living when you feel nobody loves you, and she continues to say that "everybody (...) is trying to make the hurt go away". She says the feeling is not true; some people really love you, and they try to make you the most comfortable they can to avoid your suicide; they care for you. She also states that the person is unaware to the pleasure of living and gave up long ago. P!nk says she's terrified of the dark unless the person comes with her, meaning she's afraid of the future but could handle it with the help of the loved ones. She sings "I wrote the book on running, but that chapter of my life will soon be done", saying she also tried running or escaping from life, but she got more mature. She is trying to avoid one's suicide.

Just a quick thing, a lot of you are saying "I wrote the book on running," but I think the official lyrics are "I wrote the book already." I could be wrong, because it does sound like "running" to me, too, but the lyric sheet does say "already."

She talks in an interview on Spotify about it being based on a relationship with someone who was numbing themselves and their emotions with antidepressants/anxiety meds, and how she wants to be able to feel the highs and lows of life. She’s not going to run from emotions but embrace them rather than escape from them.

Depression turns one into themselves, pills, meds, drugs will eventually fail to take one to a safer place. With a true friend (s), family however they might empathize with you and possibly grab you before you fall and no longer want or can get back up on your own.

Pinks ability to connect with her fans through her lyrics and voice breaks all barriers of music genera age and race .. Many believe the song is about suicide .. It certainly can be but I believe it has a deeper broader meaning ..This song to me is about checking out mentally in a relationship or life in general .. Life can be rough and your true friends will show up in the darkest of times and not let you check out of this place.. They will try and smooth things over try to guide you .. The great escape meaning is personal and different for every person. You may escape through drugs , alcohol, or infidelity .. The great escape is about walking down the road of life , the ups and downs , your true friends , partner in life , family will be there for you when you need them the most .

This song isn't about p!nk being suisidal she's singing about how she won't let you or who ever is thinking about it... Don't she's singing about how she doesn't want you to.

When I listen to it I think it's about suicide, but that's probably because I have experience with suicide. I guess everyone's interpretation differs based upon the experiences they have which they can relate to the song

This song is about how pills numb the world and that you don't need them to make you better. Kinda like the meaning of "Just Like a Pill" this song conveys that pills or drugs aren't the only way to make you feel better. It says that although your life may be rough if it will get better

At first when I listened to it is assumed it was about love and a broken relationship. However I realised it could mean suicide. I think its true meaning is what the song is to each individual.

I believe this song to be about suicide. She wrote Beam Me Up for a friend who has committed suicide. To me this is for anyone out there contemplating suicide.

    13. The Great Escape - Ending the main album track list on a somber but hopeful note, "The Great Escape" is addressed to both a friend of Pink's who contemplated suicide and to anyone going through a rough patch. A collaboration with Dan Wilson (who co-wrote Adele's "Someone Like You"), "The Great Escape" is a showcase for some of Pink's most personal lyrics to date on the bridge alone - "I wrote the book on running / But that chapter in my life / Will soon be done oh / I'm the kind of the great escpae / you're not gonna watch me checkin' out of this place / You're not gonna lose me." its on billboard by the writers idiots

This song is about depression and those who she cares about not being able to "feel" anything because of antidepressents. "The passion and pain are gonna keep us alive some day" means the highs and lows in life are necessary to live to the fullest.

    Suicide is a quick assumption.

Its about not let love die.

I disagree about this being about marriage. I guess it could work both ways but I think its about suicide. Always have.
