Yes, Roger Taylor was deadly serious about this song, somewhat shocking Brian May. The lyrics are brilliant - perhaps the subject really inspired Roger:
"Told my girl I have to forget her
Rather buy me a new carburettor"
    - a carb, for you non-techie youngsters, was the mechanical equivalent to fuel injectors today.
    "When I'm cruisin' in overdrive
Don't have to listen to no run-of-the-mill talk jive"
    - priorities!
But there is at least a hint that Roger has his tongue in his cheek - you can read the following as referring to a form of sexual addiction:
"With my hand on your grease gun
    It's like a disease son"

A song about the obsession of man for car. At first, Brian thought it was a joke, but went along with it. Now a success (well, to me anyway, I love this song.)

Sung by Roger, for those who didn't know.
