Spread Your Wings Lyrics

Sammy was low,
Just watching the show
Over and over again.

Knew it was time,
He made up his mind
To leave his dead life behind.

His boss said to him,
"Boy, you'd better begin
To get those crazy notions
Right out of your...

I think it’s about a very lonely person named Sammy, and no one believing in him to pursue his dreams and him not having the best luck on because of where he is from. And he may not have enough money to do anything. So his “boss” which could mean parents tell him to stop believing there, is no hope for him , because look where your from. Why can’t you just be happy. Also “ you got no real ambition you get very far” but Sammy gets sad . So he says to him self “pull your self together because you know you should do better” to set his expectations higher. Basically a poor boy trying to find his spark/ chase his dreams to make some money and not end up poor when he is older

I thought this song was about Sammy having suicidal thoughts.

This is one of John Deacon's masterpieces!! He didn't write that many Queen songs, (Unfortunately for all of us!) but when he did they were terrific.
This song is about a down-on-his-luck guy, Sammy. Life has clearly done a number on him and it's become just a broken record of mediocrity. Those around him see him as someone who, while he may be unhappy with where he is, simply can't (or just won't) change anything about it. Little do they know, he's been struggling with this inside for too long, and he's ready to desert his life of doing just enough to get by.
Sammy makes up his mind to get out of town and go chase his dreams. Naturally, the first thing that comes is a brick wall- his boss. His boss would represent anyone who asks, 'Why aren't you content with what you have now? You have enough; you make do as it is. Why isn't this enough?'
The chorus is projected in 2nd person, either as a pep-talk, directed at Sammy, or simply him speaking to himself. He's being told to spread his wings and pursue happiness, no matter how far he must go to find it.
No matter how many people he knows, or how much is in his pocket, the fact is that he's unhappy knowing he isn't living to his potential. Nobody should have their destiny decided for them. We all have hopes and dreams and all deserve a shot to accomplish them.
As the song progresses, Sam's pent up emotions and memories are revealed and he decided that if he skips this opportunity, he'd never get the chance to go make his dreams come true. His boss asks him why he can't just be happy living the way he has been, devoid of ambition, living on a routine.
The song is left open-ended, and we're never told exactly what he does. After the last verse, the strongest chorus of the song follows, inspiring both Sammy and the listener even after multiple instances of being asked to settle for less, to spread their wings and fly away. Sammy is a free man, and so are all of us.
I always felt like Freddie loved this song, and gave it a lot more flair than he normally would have had he or someone else written it... John was a very talented writer! It's too bad we don't get any more from him!
