Soul to Squeeze Lyrics

I got a bad disease,
Up from my brain is where I bleed.
Insanity it seems,
Is got me by my soul to squeeze.
Well all the love from me,
With all these dying trees I scream.
The angels in my dreams,
Have turned to demons of greed,
That's...

This song is not about a girl - it's about Anthony coming to peace with himself after finally getting clean. In this song he looks back on the years he spent struggling with drug addiction and is relieved to finally be free of his pain and destruction. In the end of the song he expresses that while drugs brought him to a lonely and dark place, he will never regret his experiences because they made him who he is. I think that this song is basically about a person finding themselves again(not having that empty feeling in their soul),the tremendous weight that is lifted when they can beat drug addiction and the freedom that comes with it.

This song is all about mental state. Peace of mind say's it all right there. I believe this because like in the first verse,

"The angels in my dreams, They turn to demons of greed thats me". Remind me exactly of how I feel when you try so hard to be the best you can be but there's always that voice in your head influencing your thoughts.

    "I got a bad disease,
Up from my brain is where I bleed.
    In sanity it seems,
Is got me by my soul to squeeze"

This explains the state of mind perfect. It may be from drug use or just the way he was born but you can see he struggles with his choices because his good morals clash with his demons inside.

"Where I go I just dont know,
I got to, got to, gotta take it slow.
When I find my piece of mind,
Im gonna give you some of my good time"

This would be him coming to terms with him self and realizing that he is having these issues of mixed emotions and taking it slow would be him spending more time on enjoying his normal day.

    "Youre so polite indeed,
Well I got everything I need.
Oh make my days a breeze,
And take away my self destruction."

Reminds me of myself as I find myself very polite and I am well aware that I have everything that I "NEED" but I still find self destruction because my subconcious is strong in its influence and I find my self making rash or bad decisions at times with family and friends because I feel more lonely then I ever did.

I feel the 2 most important give aways however comes towards the end...

    "Its bitter baby,
    And its very sweet.
    Im on a rollercoaster,
    But Im on my feet.
    Take me to the river,
    Let me on your shore.
    I be coming back baby,
I be coming back for more"

This would be his souls two sides. Bitter and sweet. He's on a rollercoaster ride for the thrills but he's on his feet because he knows what he's doing and that he's not acting right. Take me to the river through coming back for more is asking for someone to give him his good time. His one true love if you will and with the void filled in his life he will be coming back instead of his bitter side.

    The other would be

"Where I go I just dont know,
I might end up somewhere in mexico.
When I find my piece of mind,
Im gonna keep for the end of time"

This would be the closing of his long journey. For me Mexico (San Felipe) is a paradise where you can escape all the problems that are pointless and find the piece of mind we all look for.

Anyone who struggled with drugs will recognize the metaphor and parallel. The author of this article says it best-the beauty of music -is its ability to mean something different to everyone. That being said, Anthony kedis's lyrics have helped me alot. Struggling with the same demons, wwe are not alone. Thankyou Anthony!

This song is riddled with AA or NA influences. As I have been in the program successfully for over 4 years, it seems very clear to me. But that is just my interpretation. I don't disallow anybody else's because to me that is what music is about. Every song can mean something different to every individual and be equally as powerful.

Could it also almost be a song about prayer?

It sounds like depression that led him to drugs. He feels like its getting out of control; "I got to, got to, gotta take it slow." He's fully aware of whats happening to him as hes sinking more and more into addiction, but its hard for him to control. Once he gets a hold of himself; "When I find my peace of mind,
Im gonna keep you for the end of time." Hes not going back.

In his book he refers to going to going to Mexico to dry out so I think it defiantely about his addictions.

Where I go I just dont know,
I might end up somewhere in mexico.

In my very honest and sincere opinion "Soul to Squeeze" puts to music and words the very essence of mental illness. The craziness of day to day life without understanding breeds the lonliness and despair felt in the music and words. Music is said to tame the savage beast, well "Soul to Squeeze" does just that, at least for me. Love and understanding as the song implies brings the necessary stability and "peace of mind" so desparatly sought by the those lost in the void. Love heals all wounds.

It is about confronting and beating his addictions. And ABOUT THE HELP RECIEVED AND GIVEN FROM THE FELLOWSHIP OF AA and NA.

The song speaks about dealing with depression, withdrawal, and how the love of others can help one through these. This is in close reference to the hardships the Chili Peppers have faced, specifically those of frontman Anthony Kiedis.

I think this song is more about being lost and depressed/lonely as a result of drug use, and feeling "disconnected" so to speak.

It's like the artist is in love with this girl and he thinks of her as a drug. She is his SOUL TO SQUEEZE.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
