Most people paid no attention to the lyrics when this song played on a thing called a radio.

The song is about a young man taking a detour in life to have an older woman lover instead of staying in school. Of course, it has to end, and nobody likes change. He knows that he was foolish but he enjoyed the benefits of the spring / winter relationship.

Really about a bad relationship between the singer and a girl named Maggie May. She is manipulative and nasty, but he is young and inexperienced and doesn't have the courage to do anything about it.
