Rhythm of My Heart Lyrics

Across the street the river runs
Down in the gutter life is slipping away

Apparently it is about a soldier during war. The words...'photographs and kerosene light up the darkness...'. When you mix Polaroid photos with kerosene you get napalm. Also...'love may still exist in another place...I'm just yanking back the handle...no expression on my face'. Yanking back the handle of a rifle (most likely an M16)....no expression on my face. Indifference to killing he's about to do. I was in Vietnam on a chopper having that same expression after I saw what they did to little children.

It does appear to be about the uncertainty and unnecessary loss of life. Particularly that of a soldier.

This soldier is holding onto his memories of love and the hope of a heaven where love will be reunited and last forever.

The soldier also reflects on a place far away ("100 steel towns away") where the only thing being shot is a deer. As he is dying, he is energized by the memories of a woman, and uses this vision to try and escape death - the "slot machine"

in the end, he accepts his death while holding onto his love.
