It's the story of a woman who has been caught cheating on her husband or boyfriend. The bitter taste of losing all that she held dear is the relationship

It’s about losing yourself to fame. It’s about allowing your ego to take over.
“ But somewhere along the way, I got caught up in all there was to offer
And the cost was so much more than I could bear.”
Honestly, I was going to put lyrics that support that idea but I ended up with most of the song!

Watch the video on mute and you see a woman who is introspective, remorseful. And leaving at the end. And a mate who is frustrated and angry - betrayed. Not one frame suggests addiction or someone who is strung out on substances. And when a former addict has a misstep, your friends and partner typically will be there to support you, not abandon you. On the other hand, when the misstep involves an indiscretion with someone else, this is when your friends behave the way they do in this song - turning away embarrassed, with a partner who is angry. This is clearly about a women who cheated, and is now realizing the damage done and what she has thrown away for that "one slip". The lyrics "We all begin with good intent, when love was raw and young" also points to this being about a relationship, not addiction.

    This song is about suicide.
She talks about losing everything she loves and feeling so hopeless like she could not redeem herself, perhaps because of drug addiction. She feels like she has no place else to turn but to death.

Heaven bend to take my hand
    I've nowhere left to turn
I'm lost to those I thought were friends
    To everyone I know
Oh they turn their heads, embarrassed
    Pretend that they don't see
That it's one miss step, one slip, before you know it
And there doesn't seem a way to be redeemed

Its about dealing with a Borderline Personality Disorder as they push the people they love the most away. They dont keep close friends because they are afraid of loosing them. Then they are sorry and the cycle starts over again.

"I have sunk so low, I messed up"... Here she is talking about addiction. "Lost to those I thought were friends to everyone I know.." Addiction can tear apart families and friendships. "But it's one misstep and slip before you know it..." Explaining how easy it is to fall back into addiction or to stay clean.
