A Most Peculiar Man Lyrics

He was a most peculiar man.
That's what Mrs. Riordan said and she should know;
She lived upstairs from him
She said he was a most peculiar man.

He was a most peculiar man.
He lived all alone within a house,
Within a room, within...

    The most peculiar man suffers from what Karen Horney called "neurotic detachment." The attitude of neurotic detachment is "They won't like me, so I will avoid them."

    Neurotic detachment resembles introversion, but introverts are usually able to behave well in social situations when the situation requires it.

    Detached neurotics want to make friends, but they do not know how to do it.

    When I encounter a detached neurotic I smile at him and say "Hi" whenever we meet. Maybe he will open up to me.

    On the "Live from New York City, 1967" album, Paul explains that he wrote this after reading an article in a London newspaper about a man who had committed suicide. He said that he was disturbed because the story was only 4 lines long. His exact words (towards the end of his explanation) are "...And I thought, that's a VERY bad way to go out. BAD eulogy. 4 lines."

    This song is Paul Simon's eulogy of a man who wasn't quite as well off as Richard Cory. People barely noticed when the man who lived in the tiny house and the tiny room put his head in the oven and did himself in. Quite the contrast to everyone's surprise when the popular rich man took his life when the peculiar man left they weren't even sure where his brother was to be notified.
