Peggy-o Lyrics

In the S&G version the meaning is a little ambiguous. It says that Peggy-O will ride away with her true love, but not that the captain is that true love. You might assume that at first, but when it ends “If ever I return, all your cities I will burn,” it seems that she has gone away with someone else and the captain would wreak revenge on all the cities and all the ladies in the are-o.

This song is based on an old Scottish song, The Bonny lass of Fyvie, about the unrequited love of a military office for a girl he meets during his campaign.
In a way it foreshadows the theme of the Eric Clapton song Layla, which was based on a Fifth Century Persian poem, in which a man kills himself after being denied a relationship with his beloved.
The song was transposed to occur in Louisiana and has also been titled Fennario. It has also been recorded by Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and many other folk oriented artists.
