Wednesday Morning, 3 AM Lyrics

I can hear the soft breathing
Of the girl that I love,
As she lies here beside me
Asleep with the night,
And her hair, in a fine mist
Floats on my pillow,
Reflecting the glow
Of the winter moonlight.

She is soft, she is warm,
But my heart...

I always thought the song was about a prostitute he'd hooked up with at the "liquor's store". "held up and robbed her heart, liquor's store." As I'm not a native speaker of English, though I've been studying and listening to music all my life, I thought it made sense. But if the lyrics aren't what I seemed to have heard, then it must be not a hooker whose breast rises and falls, gently. However, as somebody noted above, this twist from romantic instrospectiveness to neurotic fear of being arrested is really strange. The writer shouldn't add this fact so briefly in the song, which is already short in running time. Anyway, it's a great tune. I think it's opened to intrepretations, like another supposedly odd set of lyrics, "I Am Free", by The Kinks. Bye, I'm gonna die. I want to die. I don't want to live in this fucking world anymore. Too much pain and sorrow. Hatred, worries, a fucking job, bills to pay, a lot of fussing and fury about the harm I've been victim of (though I never liked to be seen or considered a 'victim' - but in fact we all are at some point).

The song is about the last night he has with the woman that he loves. He is enjoying watching her sleeping next to him, but is sad because in the morning he will be leaving to pay for the crime he committed, the robbery. As he is looking at her, he is asking himself why he would commit a crime that would take him away from her and leave him with nothing but the memory of that night, their last together.

What is the third verse about? In the midst of a lovely love song, suddenly he despairs over robbing a liquor store??
