#1 top rated interpretation:my religious interpretation is a person completely overcome by sin. Outside, he seems like a normal guy, but he feels terrible inside. The "monster" shows what sin is like in all of us, and only God can take the feeling away.
For those who want a secular interpretation, A person has two faces. One he shows to everybody that behaves as people want, and another. As soon as no one watches, or he snaps, his other personality escapes. He hates being two-faced. He fears whenever he acts on his other personality. It is aggressive, scary, and you don't want to act that way in public. He hates this part of him, but he doesn't know how to get rid of it. -

He is saying there is no escape from failre but only redemtion thriugh God.

This song is possibly about committing a sin and wanting to do it again, but trying to suppress the urge and hide yourself to keep God on your side and save your place in heaven. Here is a portion of the song to clarify:

"The secret side of me" refers to the side that u don't want anybody to know about. "The beast is ugly". The "beast" refers to sin. "I keep it caged but I can't control it" referring to the urge of wanting to commit the sin again, but trying to suppress the urge. "Scratching on the walls... closet... and the halls" refers to the urge of wanting to commit this very same sin again. So basically to me... this whole song is basically about everything that goes through the mind of a religious homicidal maniac. -
The song's about bullying. To me, anyway.
It kind of makes sense in this perspective if you think about it. He's getting bullied a lot, but no one sees the dangerous side he has. All the anger and rage is building up until he explodes at the bullies. I know from experience how this feels. Please don't hate, we all have our own opinions on things. This is America, people. Not the early 1900s. -
I think this is a about a narcissist/personality disordered person who struggles with being humane & empathy. They hide behind their facade of charm, kindness & success. But behind closed doors, they are cruel, callous, condescending,non apologetic,a bully & emotionally abusive. My ex husband used this song for his bodybuilding routine & it took me many yrs to figure out who really was behind his mask all those yrs. He identified with this song. I pray God changes his heart to be a genuine soul with empathy & pray for his new family.

I honestly love this song so much that its my theme song. I have multiple interpretations but I don't feel comfortable enough to share them.
Monster by Skillet inspired me to right a poem that goes along with some of my interpretations.
Here is my poem:
The Monster Within
Deep within me there’s a monster begging to be let out of its cage.
The monster scratches and attempts to break the bars that keep it locked away from its freedom.
The monster is strong and puts up one hell of a fight.
But I still manage to keep it caged.
Though I manage to keep the monster caged I can’t control it.
I’m not strong enough to win against the monster that’s hidden within me.
Eventually after many attempts to escape,the monster manages to escape.
With its escape come a great deal of damage.
First comes clawing and tearing at my insides, as an act of revenge for it being locked up all that time.
Second comes death to those that encounter it, including me.
Third comes inevitable destruction to everything in its path.

it is awesome and the song makes sense this guy is a good guy but with a dark side and he needs help controlling it.

A honestly painful song about how Someone or the Protagonist himself, who seems to be labeled a Christian, but seems not to be a saved one ''yet''. Who's in suffering and screaming in pain to be ''saved''. Where He seems to come to the conclusion as a strong believer that Jesus Christ might be the only hope that could save him from this Monster that he feels is inside of him. One is not born a Christian even if he thinks he's one. Compare to a Jew. We are born only as innocent babies that have a occupied ''sin nature'' that a Jew has no REASON to believe or realizes he needs to be REDEEMED from IT yet. 'Cause he is still waiting for the Messiah to come. But to my understanding that's the Monster[SIN NATURE] that seems to grow wild in us and gets out of control as we get older. THat ''thing'' develops with us into giving us a false ego and pride if not kept in check. Along with lust,jealousy,anger,hatered etc., etc., that is absorbed in us and also compounded worse by living in this world with the rise of this out of control Monster our ''sin nature'' became. That needs to die in us first and most, in order to receive God's blessings by FAITH in the power of Jesus Christ that wants to save us and make us a ''BORN AGAIN'' soul in the spirit of CHRIST for truly knowing how to feel ''FREE'' andthen we've become a true Christian in Christ who always wants to overcome this Monster in us.

I have depression, anxiety, and a little self harm. this song reminds me of how when ever I let my anger out I feel like a monster. Hints the part when he said (And when I let it out, he'll tear me up, break me down) that's how I feel.

I think that this song is about mankind's eternal struggle against sin, and how, without God, we can never truly be rid of it. Also, I think that the line "Why won't somebody save me from this monster, make it end" is touching on the fact that so many people don't seem to realize, or worse don't believe that: God is the only savior, and that he has said that he will save us if we believe in him, and instead pray to false deities or are atheists, and then are surprised when the full consequences of sin are brought upon them, not realizing (or again, not believing) that God is the light, and without him, there is ONLY darkness.
(PS. to those of you who are currently atheists, I pray that you see the light and accept God as your savior.) -

Honestly I think it's about how we, as Christians, are persecuted because of our faith, and are thought of as monsters or crazy or insane. Persucutors may spread this about us, but the truth is that we can't control or hold back the Holy Spirit (which is thought as a monster). I think that's why in the music video they are "infected" and are so desperately try to be destroyed, so that they don't spread the "virus." Anyway that's the message I thought the were trying to convey, and for the guy or girl who is currently an Atheist, I don't want to offend you in any way but I really hope that God comes into your life and helps you with your struggles and that you may submit to him and follow him wholeheartedly and that he may bless you life in ways you or I or anybody can imagine, I'll be praying for ya. Also, I pray for the guy or girl who suffers from PTSD. I can't even imagine how much suffering you go through, but I also pray that he takes this away from you and that he comes into your life, if not already, and blesses in amazing ways. He was willing to suffer a horrible seat for us, let me emphisize, HORRIBLE DEATH.
My friend told me that some historians said that people couldn't even realize him. He looked like an abused animal. Then he hung on the cross for 9 hours, and every time he went to take a breath, he had to pull himself up by his wrists which the nails had been stabbed into him, probably getting splinters on his already exposed back on the way up and down. The crazy part is, he didn't have to do all that. He didn't have to suffer all that. He could have just caused something to happen so that all the Roman soldiers, Jewish leaders, and persecutors to die, but no. He chose to suffer then rise again, so that our sorry behinds could be saved from the punishment of sin, which is death (death and no chance of being saved from going to hell). He CHOSE to do that, even though we all, yes we ALL, have wrong and betrayed him. That's infinite love for ya man. This is why we Christians choose to share the gospel. So that the Holy Spirit may dwell in everyone's hearts, so we can show gratitude to him, and so one day we can all meet him in heaven. God is truly AWESOME. -
I struggle personally with depression, anorexia, anxiety, insomnia and self harm. I relate to it because all of these things are like a monster trapped within me. Often times i feel like a monster. I know this band is Christian but I'm posting this without bringing up religion because I for one am atheist and for two even though they are Christians does not mean every song of there's are preaching something about the bible or god or the devil.

I just know that most of their songs are relatable to a lot of us who suffer from PTSD. Whatever the true meaning of the song is really doesn't matter to me personally. I just know it's something that I can really relate to and it calms me down on those hard days. Love Ya Skillet. <3

I think it describes the darker side of someone . A Christan suffering with the choice to to right or wrong . And sin is the monster.
