Staind: It's Been Awhile Meaning

Album cover for It's Been Awhile album cover

Song Released: 2001

It's Been Awhile Lyrics

And it's been awhile
Since I could hold my head up high
And it's been awhile
Since I first saw you
And it's been awhile
Since I could stand on my own two feet again
And it's been awhile
Since I could call you

And everything I can't...

This a one kickass song but I think it is an apology song to a girl that he screwed things up with and he realizes how much he misses her and needs her... I could totally be wrong though

To Me this song has always been about Heroin addiction and nothing else. The love and hate relationship a true heroin addict goes through on a minute by minute basis, in and out of addiction. This song has spoken to Me in sobriety and during times of obsession. When I am high and caught in my heroin death grip I wish I were clean. When I am sober a single flash of a thought makes me long for another taste...

I agree that this is a song about the pure hell of addiction and the love that He fondly refers to is that of the memories of the high.

The words seem to go back and forth just as the thoughts of any addict in and out of recovery. It is a never ending cycle....

P.S. Stained did a cover of "Comfortably Numb" , which is awesome, and that song is clearly about IV drug use, so I would have to disagree with the fan who stated this song is about pot....

    It's all about the girl.

"But all that shit seems to
    disappear when I'm with you

    And it's been awhile
    Since I said I'm sorry
    And it's been awhile
Since I've seen the way the
    candle lights your face
    And it's been awhile
    But I can still remember
    just the way you taste"

Regret, the memories of these sensations, love.

    Nothing else comes close.

I feel it's about a guy who broke up with their wife(or girlfriend), because he's an alchoholic. He talks about her, and how he doesn't believe his father is to blame.

In my opinion I believe it’s about addiction to Alcohol. Listen to the words carefully. Clearly states “I can’t blame this on my father”. To me it’s meaning that his “father” was an Alcoholic when his child was growing up and he was following him in his footsteps. He didn’t blame his father for the mess he got himself in. And also the “ I still remember just the way you taste”. I don’t think he’s talking about his lost love, I think he truly misses the way Alcohol tastes. I don’t think Heroin HAS a taste. Isn’t it injected? I’ve never experienced Heroin, so I can’t state the facts. But that’s my meaning. I could be wrong. Just saying

Addiction is addiction whether it's a relationship, cars, drugs of whatever kind. Each and every addiction is the same as the other, each and every addiction can be overcome with faith and having an outlet for your feelings, pain, guilt and things broken or lost.

The narrator is someone who takes stock of his life and makes references to his previous drug addiction problem and failed relationships. The narrator mentions their father, though they believe that they only have themselves to blame for their problems. Lewis called the song, "an acknowledgement of the past."[3]

What it meant to the writer.

A songs interpretation is open to anybody and everybody right up to the point that the artist states what he or she says it means. It might mean something different to you but people aren't on here asking what it means to you, they want to know what it meant to the writer. The author of this song has stated in no uncertain terms that it is about herion addiction so any other interpretation is clearly wrong.

It's about how this person has changed and they miss the other. They want to show them how much of a better person they are and they want to do what they used to do together.

I think thats the beauty of music and the interpretation of lyrics, people can apply it to their own lives. I think he wrote it to purposely mean 2 interpretations, an addiction to heroin and an addiction to a woman he loved and hurt and how one of those masked the other.

As a heroin addict I can totaly relate to the low self esteem he is singing about in this song and then finaly beating it or at least winning the battle for now.

It's about addiction and not going back to that life . He talked about it on concert back in 2000 . He had a long history with substance abuse and that's where the song comes from hope that helps

I think that he got hooked on drugs and it caused so much stress in his relationship that they broke up. Now since he's sober, he finds her picture (in the video), and realizes he misses her and apologizes to all the shit he caused by his drug use.
