   Every man made kingdom falls eventually. The clever kingdom in power now uses imagery, the media and celebrities to keep its subjects in slavery, By promoting and building the mainframe that makes people think they are free when they are really oppressed. The first verse is a warning to ll those involved in the oppression. The second verse is warning the "merchants" ,people who sell themselves to the "kings of the earth" to be used of them in exchange for fame,money ect.to promote their propaganda to the masses.
   The third verse( my favorite) he calls out the kings of the earth. The temple is where it started. The powerful Jewish elites who saw Jesus as a threat to their power, control and economy, killed him. They were also able to effect decisions made be Rome itself, by bribes and payoffs. These people gained power during the Roman empire, were slowed down by the apostles and bound for a figurative 1000 years ( called the dragon in revelation) they were loosed in approx 1910 ish where they quickly succeeded in controlling the population and began to break down moral standards in the twenties. It doesn't take a lot of research to know that the media,Hollywood and organizations like the anti defamation league and others are largely controlled by these people. They convinced the people to have their messiah/ deliverer crucified. And the question Steve Earle so cleverly puts to them, is,when the people find out that you have been manipulating their minds against their own freedom, will they be mad enough to nail you on the cross? Reward her even as she has rewarded you, and double into her double according to her works:in the cup which she has filled fill to her double.(let me just say that these people have successfully made christianity and the bible a joke and an "oppressive " system)
