Interstate Love Song Lyrics

Waiting on a Sunday afternoon
For what I read between the lines,
Your lies
Feelin' like a hand in rusted shame
So do you laugh or does it cry?
Reply?

Leavin' on a southern train
Only yesterday you lied,
Promises of what I seemed to...

The guy doesn't know.. the lyrics are not rosted shame, it's rust shame. And I VH1's Storytellers .. this was a song written when the bassist was a back of an U haul and he had this riff and they where on walkie talkies and then the song came together.
What I think it means is the person in a relationship was sick of the lies and the left.

Under the duality of the doubled ways of an interstate road, the verses represent a kind of a dialogue between two people or 'within' a splitted mind. The inversion that the second and the last estanzas brings ('things you said to me' and 'things I said to you') reinforces such interpretation.
And the polemic phrase "rosted shame" reminds me a sort of vision of a person who has his/her hand on his/her face, indicating the dramatization of a feeling as of innocent shame as disgrace for a happening. It could be a vision of a moment in which a person,a child doing it on the sidewalk in a road trip for example.
