The Setting Sun Lyrics

Hey!
(Hey, hey)

Yeah, Yeah (Yeah!)

Yeah, Yeah (Yeah!)

I've got a wound that doesn't heal,
Burning out again,
Burning out again

I've not sure which of me is real,
And I'm alone again,
Burning out again

My hope runs underneath...

This song addresses a similar dilemma to that of the Beautiful Letdown (the track itself); the speaker is discontent with life on Earth. He expresses a hope for something more that will not be found in this life. He's "burning out" and unsure about himself and his identity or purpose.

Switchfoot tends to express the notion of freedom often associated with post-death (Heaven pretty much), and this theme carries on through this song. The place of belonging being "Beyond the Setting Sun" lends further credibility to this desire to be in Heaven (it's not of this world).

"Back where we belong" would imply that the speaker and his companions (we as human beings) have departed from something we once had. Most likely, this is a relationship with God, or simply a higher state of being. We have left behind or lost sight of our true purpose, but may return to it.

The last verse, "Let the weak say I am strong..." addresses the naysayers of this philosophy. Those who simply regard people like the speaker to be either "stronger" than them (an excuse for their own failure), or mockingly self-righteous.
