   I just studied James 1:2-4 and, when I was scrolling throught my instagram, I saw my favorite band ever singing this song, cellebrating 16 years since the ablum "Nothing is Sound" was released. James says we should be happy when we face trials, because they produce patience and then we became mature and able to handle things. These trials are not temptations. These trials are send by God to make us stronger and prove our faith on Him, not because he needs it, but to show to ourselves what trusting in God can do. And, to achieve it, we have to pass throught trials. We can't avoid them. When I heard this song, I see "the shadow" as the trials, the troubles we face. "Proves" is when our faith is tested by the Lord. "the sunshine" is the result of faith that was tested and succeed on its test: it gains patience and a mature spirit. So, "the shadows proves the sunshine" means "We have to face trials in our lives and, if we get approved, we enjoy the patience and the matureness that only God can provide us".

   I could not imagine how anyone could possibly be this creative/artistic. Undoubtedly, he was/they were inspired by God.
   
   This is the true representation of "turning back"; of repentance. I pray that people would also realize this - that they may renew the joy of their salvation (if needed).

   Life may seem dark and terrible and like it will never get better. But the shadow proves the sunshine. The fact that one feels that life should be better proves that life can be better. How can you know life can be better without experiencing the better life in the first place?

   Well, in an interview I read Jon Foreman said he wrote this song when he visited South Africa for the first time. He said he saw how little they have (the poor kids/runaways) yet they have everything they need because they have love and God. How SA is moneywise a poor nation but they are actually really rich because of their cultural heritage. and how he wants his life to be like that, how if his life was full of 'shadows' (sadness, poverty, loss) that the few good things in his life would be enough to keep him happy and keep going.

   This song is basically about how the world can seem bad, dark, terrible, but it's because people measure life according to the bad things that happen and not the good. Thus, the shadows prove that the sunshine exists, because without light there could be no shadow.
   
   In other words, the message of this song is: hang in there and you'll be OK. We all go through dark periods, but this is only a test of faith and ultimately you will emerge with your faith stronger and will be a better person for it.
