Hey now call it a split 'cause you know that you will
Oh you bite your friend like chocolate
You say, we'll go where nobody knows, with guns hidden under our petticoats
No we're never gonna quit it, no we're never gonna quit it no

Now run,...

To all of the intelligent people out there that know this song is clearly about heroin, thank you for not being an idiot like all these other ones who are lieing to themselves like Healy and the band did upon release. It's not about weed or being bored in a small town its called smart move Healy on waiting til you got everyone hooked on you to tell the truth about being hooked on heroin. Love it. As a musician this is metaphorically clear in meaning. Nice work Matty, we love you!

This is most definitely about heroin usage. Anyone who can't see that, no need to repeat or beat a dead horse. But calling a split. IT'S NOT SPLIFF lol hiding guns (srynge), chocolate (slang for heroin)... if you think it's about anything else I beg, urge, and hope you ask one of the song writers, now.

Most of you people here are wrong. Chocolate is slang for heroin and no other drug where I am from and this is the same for where the 1975 grew up. Guns is slang for syringe. The lyrics at the beginning, "call it a split 'cause I know that you will" NOT spliff!!! Look at the official lyrics on the1975.Com. A split is when two heroin users split the bag evenly, the lyrics follow on to say "you bite your friends like chocolate" meaning the so called split isn't actually a split, the person is taking more than half and is so addicted to heroin he is screwing over his friend.

I am a heroin addict (clean now) and this is exactly what happens... my friend and I used to use in my car, we would buy a bag between us and my friend being the more addicted person would always take more than half and call it a split. It gets to a point that it isn't even worth arguing over so you just let them because you feel bad for them. We called syringes guns and Heroin chocolate because it smells like chocolate when smoked or when heating on the spoon, ready to "gun" (inject)... We have also had multiple run-ins with "boys in blue" and we have often been in car chases and thankfully never actually caught.

The song is undoubtedly about heroin addiction and the perils of using heroin

I think it's about teenagers rebelling in a small podunk town, doing whatever they want with whomever they want. The whole chocolate reference is saying that this lifestyle is addictive, with some bitter moments but it's mostly sweet, which is what keeps them going at it. It's obviously also talking about drugs but I think its more about how it's all basically a big FU to the rest of the world.

Well I think its about a teenage love being rebellious and doing things that are bitter yet sweet like chocolate and making promises and issues in that romance . At least its vow I think about it .

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

It's about a group of teenagers doing weed and/or other drugs in a really small town and trying (and probably failing) to stay out of trouble while doing it.

Chocolate is a popular type of cannabis in England, the song is about teenage shenanigans.

Matt Healy > the lead singer, said that Chocolate is about like small town problems with the law and getting into a bit of trouble (as say a teenager might)..

I kind of thought just through the lyrics and stuff that the reference to 'Chocolate' was like comparing it to Heroine or another drug, like it's addictive...
