The Calling: One By One Meaning
One By One Lyrics
All is calm there on the street
The shadows pass him hung right over
The pain on his face he knew he'd keep...
His hair is long, and it's twisted, it's twisted
Around the smile spread cheek to...
-
"He stands alone outside the blooming yard."
- this could be a beggar.
"All is calm there on the street
The shadows pass him hung right over
The pain on his face he knew he'd keep...
His hair is long, and it's twisted, it's twisted
Around the smile spread cheek to cheek"
- and this beggar haven't taken a bath for he never thought of it instead, wait for a drop of penny from somebody. this will make him happy
"Another child, another soul, grabs a hold
To the metal that will end his misery..."
- and another beggar like him took a can to be used,
"Red light they come and they take him away
In the thoughts, he'll be better, some day..."
- and the force or government officials may have taken them to the proper authority where they can enjoy being kids, (red lights may mean police's siren)
that's what it means for me, ^^ -
I saw kind of a YouTube war going on over the meaning of this song, so I decided to address it. I don't know whether the band has stated this directly or not but this song is so blatantly about the Columbine shootings, and on some level it's an account that has sympathy for the boys who carried out the act. "Another child, another soul grabs ahold to the metal that will end his misery" is a direct reference to the use of a gun, and "Two by two he's getting you" implies killing. The second verse talks about the impact the event had on victims and survivors, and also the legacy that Eric and Dylan left behind ("He's sure to shine / In this deep, dark, fucked-up, played-out reality show"). At the very least you can tell this is a song about a school shooting and the widespread belief is that it's Columbine.
