#1 top rated interpretation:Although a lot of people say this is a religious song, it has a different meaning to me (I'm not religious). This song brings back the time I spent watching my 3 month old son in the hospital, fighting for his life. I held him tight and told him I was there, no matter what the outcome (we were told he would die - and if he didn't, he'd be a vegetable). No matter what, I will always be there for him, protecting and loving him. I want him to know that no matter what comes his way in the future, I'll be right there, being his rock.

Isaac Slade I believe is Christian, but that's not the reason he wrote the song. In fact, when asked he never mentions God or religion. He wrote the song as a lullaby to comfort his little brother at night when he can't sleep. So I agree with the anon that stated you can interpret it how you want, but never did Slade mention God when speaking about it. He's the link to the interveiw I got the information from. I agree with the above interpretations but I also think you can interpret it in many ways. Although it has references from the bible, it can also mean other things. I think that's the point- to speak to the hearts of every listener - and I don't know how this could not speak to eveyone in some way. I think it could also be someone that died saying that "I will be with you" even after death, (or possibly other separating circumstances) I still am here with you. Darkness being described can mean mourning. My first thought when I heard the somg was that I want it played at my funeral. Then when I realized it was also religious I thought that would be innappropriate but after analyzing it's many meanings, I feel that most songs are open to interpretation, regardless of the writer's reason for writing it. That's the beauty of music. This is a beautiful song.

The Lord was finally able to reach my heart when I was 45 yrs. old. Since then I have HIS peace each and every day..... This song makes my heart sing as I believe it was God speaking to The Fray. Each word came right from the Bible whether they knew it or not. Which brings me to say ... if the band knows the Lord then wonderful!!! God used them to pass on His Word and His Peace. If they don't know The Lord, then He was reaching out to them to know Him. Either way, God is good and I cherish this song and can't believe I just heard it 3 days ago for the first time!

Issac wrote this to his brother because he was struggling to sleep and deal with his own stress.
I think the metaphorical meaning is that there is someone who will be by your side and you're not really alone. That somewhere out there someone is looking out for you. -
It's definitely a religious song. It's seems like the song is being told through God. Basically it's God saying he is with us now and when we die he will be there waiting for us when we arrive at the gates to his kingdom. He is assuring us that regardless of any sin/darkness that surrounds us he is always there and not to fear death because even in death he is there. The song hits a nerve for me every time I hear it. To me it's my mom telling me she is watching over me and will see me when the darkness comes. I have Psalm 46:10 tattooed on my foot,"Be Still And Know, That I Am God", I feel that's what the song is about. Made my soul smile when I 1st heard the song.....simply beautiful :)

The song I feel is about death, the final goodbye. Comforting a loved one within their final days, telling them not to fear the darkness that will insue, allowing them to know that you will always be by their side through their final days and will some day be reunited on the other side.

Wheather going through the valley (hard times: Psalm 23) or on your death bed...be still for God is with you and He will never leave you or forsake you, His love for you is not dependant upon your love for Him. He loves you, He loves you, He loves you! -
