Happiness Lyrics

Happiness is just outside my window
Would it crash blowing 80-miles an hour?
Or is happiness a little more like knocking
On your door, and you just let it in?

Happiness feels a lot like sorrow
Let it be, you can’t make it come or go
But...

    1. Happiness is not something you can search for. So in searching, you will never find it because you do not know where to look. And one morning, you will wake up and realize that everything you have ever wanted, you used to have, or already have. So it feels a lot like sorrow because in the time you spent trying to find “happiness, “you should have been enjoying what you had. Because now that “It’s gone for a while, not for good but for now. But gone for now feels a lot more like gone for good” because upon looking back, you regret that you never took advantage of what you had. Hence the term, “You never know what you got till it’s gone. “ When Isaac Slade’s wife went to Australia, He realized that she was a source of happiness for him. So while she was gone, it hurt him to know this, because it took her being gone for him to realize how much she meant to him; and now that she is gone, it is just for a while, but it seems like gone for good, because he can never go back and take advantage of the time he had with her. So he is waiting for her to return and trying to find happiness for himself, but it is destroying him because in his heart, he knows that his happiness lies with Anna, but in his mind, he is trying to find a substitute. So it is dangerous to try and grasp it for yourself, it will be the fruitless pursuit, because again, you never know where to look. And in trying to find happiness, people resort to temporary things, things that make them happy for a while. But if you look beneath the surface, you will find that “Happiness was never mine to hold. “ And then they fall into despair because these things have ruined their chance at TRUE happiness, even if just for a while. So he realizes that “Happiness is just like my old man told me. Look for it and you will never find it all. But let it go, live your life and leave it, and one day, you will wake up and she will be home.” People say to “go out and find what makes you happy, but don’t go searching for what you’ve already got. And “Happiness is a firecracker sitting on my head board. Happiness sends off a shower of sparks. So child, light the fuse and get away” because as soon as happiness finds you, you will realize that it was not everything you had hoped for. Because people say “The only thing that is getting me through my pain is that there is happiness waiting for me, a light at the end of the tunnel.” So as soon as you find the “light,” you will have achieved everything you had ever hoped and prayed for, but now, there’s nothing left to FIGHT for. That is why some people say that you can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness because in being sad, you want to be happy, so it gives you a purpose in life. And once you achieve happiness, everyone knows that us humans can never be satisfied, so it is like “What now?” So Slade says, “Happiness sums up the record for me. Every good thing is good because it costs something. Every yes has a no. When you get to 'that place' often it costs more than you thought, but it's worth it". SO everything comes with a price. At the end of your life, in order to get to heaven, you have to give up all attachments on earth, the “temporary pleasures” so to speak. Are you willing to give up the necessary price to be happy?

When I saw them in concert the lead singer said he wrote this song about the woman who is now his wife. She was away in Australia and he missed her. She brought him "Happiness" and at that time he was in the U.S. without her and struggling to be happy. In the end he knew she would be back with him and while (at the time and in the moment without her) it seemed like his happiness was gone forever in a short while she would return to him and all would be well again. When she was away there was nothing he could do about her absence. It hurt within his heart. He couldn't make happiness simply appear when he missed her. When you realy yearn for someone having them gone for a short time absolutely feels like they will be gone forever and along with it your happiness will also be gone forever thanks to the void it created when they went away. Sometimes attaining happiness is about having realistic goals and realistic standards. Life seldom works out the way we want it to and instead of feeling helpless and hopeless sometimes we just need to wait and be ready when those moments of joy enter our lives either for the first time or once again after they have been gone for some time.

Happiness is not something you can take for yourself whenever you want. It is dangerous to try to grasp it and hold on because when you try to restrain it, you will find that you don't actually have happiness, but rather whatever can give you the most pleasure at that time- this is how it can destoy you (the fruitless pursuit). So "live your life and leave it" and if you live a good and earnest life, one day you'll wake up and she'll be home.. I didn't like this song the first time I heard it but it has become one of my favorite Fray songs. Good stuff.

Happiness is practically everywhere, in a tree, between your footsteps, a turn to the west. But this doesn't mean it's easy to grasp and keep. You want happiness, but are you willing to do something to achieve it, or sit around hoping it comes your way?
