From the early 60's the rock and roll bands were thought of as a bunch of young adults on drugs, having to take drugs to be creative in music. Oh was this so incorrect. In fact the lyrics mention in the beginning that rock and roll music is a key that breaks language barriers around the world. In this song the lyrics were a statement by the Moody Blues, saying DON'T you dare just think I'm a singer in a rock and roll band. The bands traveled, gaining knowledge of the turmoil going around the world, as they were putting on concerts. For example the lyrics 'and your the only other person to know', was comparing the difference between someone who was closed minded and someone who goes around the world and has interactions with 100's of thousands, like a singer in a rock and roll band. Another lyric said how can we understand riots by the people for the people who are only destroying themselves. Think about this for a minute, has this ever changed from the 60's, no it's still happening today. So don't tell me I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band.

This could mean that the fallen angels...are taking control of humankind and making them slaves and causing man to hate and make war against each other...scorching the earth could be the crop circles that are in the mid west...created by the fallen ones. There are more signs in the heavens these days...just watch the night skies!

According to Justin Hayward, in the early 1970s the Moody Blues had a large group of followers who were looking to them for life's answers. The purpose of this song was to say, in essence, don't look to us for the answers, "we're just the singers in a rock and roll band".
This song only served to fuel their followers even more. I have been listening to The Moody Blues since I was a kid, in the early 1970s I've seen them in concert 3 times.
