Mine's Not A High Horse Lyrics

After that confrontation
you left me wringing my cold hands
we shared some information

This song is taking place after Christ's "temptation" by Satan in the desert. It is Satan's take on the encounter. And it's not "falling out of the van" it's "falling out of devan" referencing Christ's falling out of holy counsel or divinity while on the cross when he questions God. At that moment, Christ falls off of his "high horse" in Satan's eyes.

I had just finished reading "A Man for all Seasons," a play by Robert Bolt concerning the events that precipitated the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic church when I first heard The Shins' song "Mine's not a high horse." I believe the song to be a reference to the play. Central to that historical drama was the failure of Lawyer Sir Thomas More to give his consent to the divorce and remarriage of Henry VIII or his refusal to take an oath acknowledging the supremacy of England's king over all foreign sovereigns (and namely the Pope in Rome). The references to "holy waters," "muddy waters" etc. In the song are a play on words that bare meaning related to the use of "waters" as a symbol for the Law (among other things) throughout the play. If I'm wrong it matters not, for I dare say that there are few fans of Sir Thomas More's among the countless number of Shin's fans. This makes Shins sad I'm sure, but prove me wrong. s
