Making a living the old, hard way is just making a living by hard work. It could refer to any line-based job: factory, telephone, fishing. There's a peace of mind that comes with honest, hard labor. However...

The dog eating purple flowers and tree-hugging lyrics and I think we're getting into druggy feels.

My guess is that because this man did some drugs, he was writing an ode to the working man who also took some party drugs to self-medicate through this tough life.

But who knows? Only God and Tommy for sure.

I think this song is probably about prostitution, although it could mean other things, of course.

"Making a living the old, hard way
Taking and giving by day by day
I dig the snow and the rain and the bright sunshine
I’m draggin’ the line (draggin’ the line)"

The line "the old, hard way" is about working as a hooker, since prostitution is the oldest profession in the world. "Taking and giving day by day" means that the prostitute earns money and loses her virginity at the same time.

"Draggin' the line" means that if one's a prostitute, they fish for customers (or "tricks")...

Anyway, this is a really neat, as well as very awesome song to listen to and be inspired by, too. :)
