Wings for Marie (Pt 1) Lyrics

You believed
You believed in moments none could see
You believed in me

A passionate spirit.
Uncompromised.
Boundless and open.
A light in your eye.
In my own eyes.

Broken, broken.
Fell at the hands of this moment so that I wouldn't...

Really one of those Tool songs that bring a tear... or make you think of bringing a tear, if you are like me. Obviously it is about his mother. "A son to an angel" really gives it away. He says that despite everything he ever did to piss her off, she still believed he was a beautiful child who always did these wonderful things. He says it really made him think and changed him.... even led to his own spirituality (christian or not, spiritual is spiritual). Sounds like she passed away, or is in the process with his angel references and the lyric "now it’s time for us to let you go". BIG turn from the A Perfect Circle song Judith (lol).
Really makes you stop and think of those who have changed you and you took them for granted...

    Oh, how I adore Tool.

This song really connects to it's second part(10,000 days). MJK always had problems accepting his mother's faith in God even though she had been paralyzed for 27 years (10,000 days) before she died. In both of these songs he is asking that even because of the things he had said (Judith) questioning her faith, that she will still be let into Heaven and she passed the faith onto him.

Also the final boomy sound in this song is that of a casket closing, signifying the end of her physical being and the beginning of her soul's journey onward in "Wings pt 2"

remember "jimmy" his mom had an anyerisum sp? causing her to be partially catatonic and paralyzed (remember "judith") this happen when he was 11. 10,000 days is equal to the amount of years his mother lived in this way...until she died. add it up.

The name Wings for Marie is saying that his mother whose middle name is Marie and that she went to heaven and society has said that you get wings and a harp and become an angel when you "die" BUT ITS NOT TRUE YOU BECOME SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN THEM.

This song is about his mother, and the pain he feels for the loss of the person responsible for bringing him into existance, and how he feels bare with out her, yet he is thankful and ever greatful for her guidance. It also says to me in these brilliantly comprised lyrics that if it wasn't for her and the fact that she lived the way she did he would have never became the person he is today...

Yeah 10,000 Days title is def. about the time of his mother's accident till her death. This song in particular. I agree with some of the views. It is about saying to his mother that he is sorry for what he said and did and if anyone deserves Heaven it is her. A large part of this album shows how his views of things have changed. Theres a more somber tone to a lot of the tracks. He has discussed openly how his mother's death has changed him.

    WINGS FOR MARIE Pt 1
    Words by Maynard James Keenan

You believed in movements none could see.
    you believed in me.
    A passionate spirit.
    Uncompromised.
    Boundless and open.
    A light in your eyes.
    Then immobilized.
    Broken.
    Fell at the hands
of those movements that I wouldn't see.
yet it was you who prayed for me.
So what have I done to be son to an angel?
What have I done To be worthy?

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescents. (Sp)
Difficult to see you in this light
Please forgive this selfish question, but...
What am I to say to all these ghouls tonight?
    "She never told a lie.
Well, might of told a lie, but never lived one."
"Didn't have a life, didn't have a life, but surely saved one."
    See? I'm alright.
Now it's Time for us to let you go.

Supposedly, they were writing Wings for Marie while Maynard's mother while she was still alive, she passed away before the completion. Her middle name is Marie. It was 27 years from the time of the accident that paralyzed her to her death: 10,000 days. It was funny, I was digging through tons of books and looking online trying to find an occult reference to the # 10,000 and came up with nothing. That's just one of those things that without being told we might not have been able to figure out by our selves.

A first aproach to 10,000 days.

I'm listening to this disc complete for the first time today, and before getting into each song and peeling it, one thing that called my attention was the number, those 10,000 days, how many years is that?...(calculator: 10.000/365 = 27,39726...That was easy).

But then i wondered about those years...What happened during that time? Talking about Tool, for me the key it's in the name, like in the case of Ænima (anima+enema=cleansing of the shadow/soul/self to ensure evolution. After you know that, you can dig really down into jung and bill hicks, over there in arizona bay). So, in the case of 10,000 days, what about those 27 years?, for the band as a unit, and for Maynard as a writer.

What I have liked the most about Tool since I first heard it, it's the simple idea of being able to play that incredible music with some colleagues and enjoy the kind of catharsis that has to be to play that loud and long and intense and interesting, jazzy/jammy/hard core/punk/rock/great songs, cause if it works just by hearing it, how it could feel to play it, and then be able to stand in front of the world and shout it, and that actually can mean anything for those who give it a hear, in this infested of nothing musical landscape that we have today.

And in the particular case of Maynard, who as far as I know it’s the responsable for the lyrical aspect of the band; what is he singin, talking, yelling, complaning, shouting, sugesting, asking, wispering about?

27 seven years, for Maynard…i don’t know how old is he, but don’t think he’s 27, so it’s probably not about he’s bithday.

With this idea in the head, I went to some webpages to pick up information, including this, and I found one that said something about the song “wings for marie (part.1)”: “...The 17-minute epic "wings for marie/10,000 days" is an ode to his mother, who passed away during the band's hiatus after dealing with paralysis from a stroke for 27 years...”, rob theakston, allmusic.Com.

27 years, 10,000 days, catarsis, scream, cry, love...I’m sure that this guy has a lot to feel, comunicate and exorcise about those 10,000 days. And with the band and the music they create the best way for him to let it all go, swiming trough a river of sonorous vibrations, and transform it into something tangible.

So maybe the key to understand this great piece of artwork it’s in this song and it’s healling intention.

    At least, that’s what ithink.

Well yeah its probally obvious I mean you look at all the songs before this about him talking about how faith blinds everyone and in judith him asking his mother why you still believe in him after what he's done to you. I think this song and 10,000 days is saying that I don't know if there's a god out there but if there is you deserve to be with him more then anyone and I hope you do.
