   There are all these tangible items that she wants to give him so he will still love her. He just wants to remind her that no matter what you do, no matter what you give me, the only thing that will truly make me happy is...you. She also has that fear that with time, she will not be the girl he married and he will not love her anymore. She fears her "love will grow cold" or she won't be able to tell him anything that will surprise him or make him happy. She has sinned before many times; she fears he will eventually not be able to stand her anymore and leave her. However, all he wants is her.

   This song is about God and how he wants nothing that you offer. He wants nothing that religions offer. He just wants the love that only a person can truly feel inside without outside interference, fear or false promises. You need to have TRUE love and that is all that he asks for. BTW, I am the farthest thing from a religious person. But, this is what the song is about.

   This song, is about love, and about not needing material things to prove your love to someone. It is said Bono wrote this in regards to his wife Ali, others say it is in regards to Gods love. I spose that, will forever be up for interpritation

   ahh!! such a wonderful song!! I always told her the same things but she married someone else because he was more richer and handsome. But now she realized it was love that to look for and the lust and youth disappears in time. I always wanted her and I promised her to give all the riches and gold but I wanted nothing in return only her...oh only her!! But the life have now twisted and now I don't want her as I have my love and I'm disgusted by her!! The opposite of love is not hate its disgust and to fill pity on someone!! I pity her life!! I hope someday ill be happy again!!

   There is no single meaning to any song, (only to the writer) but lyrics are abstract and contain ambiguities. That is the beauty of music and lyrics... Is that the listener is to interpret the words to his/her own feelings. What a song means to me might have a different meaning to you! I am almost positive the song was written by Dean Dyson not Bono!
