   I always thought it was about a woman who got raped, but decides to have the child, her pearl in perfect condition, because she finds beauty even in that circusnstance, that even in one of the most traumatic events of her life, somenthing Beautiful can happen, and that is the little life she carries.

   i don't think it's about a prostitute at all. just because she "walks on the streets"? i think Grace is about someone or something always being there for you. and no matter what the situation is, however bad it may be, Grace makes it better for you. in my life, i think of my Mother when i hear this song...

   I sang this song at my brother’s funeral. What it meant for me was that in the most horrific moments in our lives. Even if we are the cause of it. Whatever happens, there are moments of beauty. Moments when we defeat the empty void through our humanity. When Bono sings
   “She carries a pearl in perfect condition
   what once was hurt
   what once was friction
   what left a mark
   No longer stings...
   Because Grace makes beauty
   Out of ugly things”
   I think he is illustrating that point. Life can be a dark place however; how we respond to the darkness can save our soul or even more important… someone else’s soul.

   Bono talks a lot about the idea of Grace in Christianity. Even though bad things we do come back to bite our butts (Karma), there is this idea of Grace which defies logic, and forgives our trespasses. Grace does indeed turn ugly things into beautiful things--something Oscar Wilde might have said once or twice.
   If you want to explore Bono's conception of Grace, just Google: Bono Grace. You'll find a few interviews where he talks at length about Grace in the Christian Tradition. Christianity is all about turning over a new leaf, and Grace is all part of that process. Also, God grants us Grace unmerited (we don't even deserve it, but God gives us Grace despite this). It's like that Discotechque song: "It's not a trick, cause you cant' learn it. It's the way you don't pay, that's okay, you can't earn it." Hope this helps.

   People! My mother and I both interpret the song Grace as being a song about a prostitute with a really blessed heart who is able to overcome the difficulties of her life and find beauty in ugly situations because of her faith.
   Does anyone agree with that? If not, give it a try, interpret the song through this idea and you'll be fascinated with the match!
