It's a breakup song. Bono, or really, the singer/narrator, is asking his former lover who will take care of her when he isn't there anymore, best shown in the lyric near the end, "Who's gonna take the place of me?". In the verses, he is listing what he doesn't like about her (ex: "Well you left my heart as empty as a vacant lot"). Also, near the end of the song, he thinks breaking up is for the best and tells his former lover not to look back. Still, he wants to be friends, as he says/asks at the end of one of the verses.
