Lennon mentions that the Beatles kept on being asked what they thought about the Vietnam war. They were told not to talk about it as they were muscians and shouldn't talk about politics. The band was against this, but John says that he wanted to make a statement. So he wrote this and wanted this to be their answer to what they thought about the war.
The rest of the band was apprehensive about the song, and they said that it was too slow to be released as a single. That is why there are so many versions or it, on the white album it is slow, but they have the fast version where Lennon says you can count me out....In, which raised even more controversy. When asked what he meant by you can count me out....in, he stated that he didn't agree with the war, he didn't believe in violence, he was non-violent, but wasn't sure if he could remain a non-violent person. -
