   From my experience and what I've seen among my friends, this song sums up a pretty common feeling once you've dated a bit. As you mature, the list of things more important than women grows pretty quick (though for a southern fellow, fishing probably doesn't take long to get on it.)

   This is mainly about a guy who is obsessed with fishing, but his wife is totally fed up with his obsessive behavior. All he does ALL day is fish. So she gives him a choice, either their relation ship is over and he gives up his obsession or he leaves her for a fish. So the story ends with him choosing his obsession over his lovely wife. (or girlfriend)

   it means he loves her. but he also loves to fish. he will spend all day catching nothing and she gives him hell when he comes home. she threatens to leave him if he goes fishing.
   
   he chooses to go fishing over carring on a verbally abusive relationship, that he seems to want as stated later in the song, "there's a chance, that if i hurry, i can beg her to stay"
   
   he is in a catch 22. he doesn't know if he likes fishing or being verbally abused more
