   Bowie is mocking the religious zealots who are against sex, drugs and rock n roll. The preachers claimed that sex, drugs and rock n roll were sinful. God told them so because they have some secret insight into God’s mind. Bowie counters this with a message of his own, not from God but from Starman.
   
   Like God, the Starman only reveals his insight to one person. His excuse that he thinks he will blow our minds is just as valid as whatever religious nonsense people use to claim exclusive knowledge.
   
   Unlike God who hates sex, drugs and rock n roll, the Starman encourages these. Let the children lose it - lose virginity. Let the children use it - use drugs to expand your minds. Let the children boogie - sing and dance.
   
   He ends the song just teasing the religious goofballs - la, la, la, la.

   A belif in greater life forms in space, presumably benevilent. Because of humanitys ignorance of humans about aliens the "starman" can't reveal himself. Ultimately its a song about hope and faith.
