Fitz & the Tantrums: MerryGoRound Meaning

   I get the impression that this song touches on the idea that many members of society want to fit in with the rest of the group and end up losing themselves in the process.
   (verse 1)
   "I'm tied to the wings of a plane"
   - The (air)plane in question could be referred to as our plane of existence and how we are all "tied" to our reality and how we are all on this trip together. The meaning of this line could even go deeper into the idea that we can't see who the pilot is or who/what is in control, or even what our destination is.
   "The skies pass the echo of the haze"
   - Continuing with the airplane analogy, planes fly through clouds where the vision of the destination is hazed. Likewise, we pass through similar clouds in life where we all face moments of uncertainty; when we do not have a clear vision of what is happening and are not in control of the circumstances around us.
   "But yesterday's tired today"
   - Due to the uncertainties of life, and how we often lose control of our circumstances, it is obvious that many people grow tired of life and trying to be whatever we feel society wants us to be. The irony is that everyone tends to feel the same way since we are all on this journey together.
   "I'm trying to remember my name"
   - Since we tend to lose sight of our destination, or goals, by passing through clouds of uncertainty it stands to reason that we tend to lose sight of ourselves and forget who we are. It is in these moments of uncertainty that many people do deep soul searching as if to remember who they are.
   (verse 2)
   "I'm stuck on the edge of no place"
   - After such soul searching, many people adopt the idea that their existence is "stuck" in someplace that has no real meaning.
   "The walls screamin' silent to make"
   - Many people, feeling vulnerable after coming to such realizations and conclusions, feel as though the social "walls" or expectations of others, are screaming at those struggling to fit in to make a decision about who they want to be and how they want to interact with the rest of the world.
   "The faces blend into each day"
   - By feeling forced to fit in, many people feel as though they need to build a new "face" or personality for themselves. After years trying to win society's approval, and all the faces one has built becomes blurred together causing one to forget who they once were.
   "I'm trying to remember my name"
   - F&T repeats this line as a way of bringing the verses together; saying that we are all tied together on this (air)plane of existence, that we have all sacrificed our identities in order to fit in, and that we grow to regret that choice and begin to reflect and want to return to who we once were.
   (chorus)
   "Spinnin' all my lives like, turning 'til the wheels brake"
   - By building our "faces" to be used based on the groups we interact with, we juggle our identities around until the wheels on which they move to break down.
   "Dancin' on the wind of this merry-go-round, oh oh oh"
   - Since many people want to fit in (ride on the merr-go-round of society) they try to build a new version of themselves that will be accepted. Since they are not "in" yet, it can be suggested that they are "dancing on the wind" of the spining expectations in a way to earn their acceptance by the rest of society.
   "Spinnin' all my lives like, turning while the wheels shake"
   - Once again, we juggle our self-made identities in the attempt to be accepted even when those expectations are not entirely stable, or are shakey, to begin with.
   "Dancin' on the wind of this merry-go-round, oh oh oh"
   - Since we all want to be accepted, and society's expectations are constantly revolving around the idea of what/who should and should not be accepted, we are all dancing the best we can and looking for the opportunity to jump on the merry-go-round of life.
