There are 2 ways you can look at what this song is about. Lyrically it is about an old man looking back on his life before he dies. In real life though Sinatra was planning to retire after 33 years in the music business so this song was in his way a farewell. Of course a few years later he would come out of retirement and continue performing until 3 years before his death.
