   I was just reading the first few chapters of Denis Johnson’s novel, The Stars at Noon. I thought...these sentences seem familiar. Then I recalled this song. Not sure why Sonic Youth didn’t credit the novel as their inspiration.

   i think that the "he was candy all over" part is talking about like a salesperson, maybe on a tv screen or sumthin. suggesting that he was very convincing... that kinda connects to the whole marketing and commercialization theme in this song.

   I believe this is a song about the commercialization of so many things in America, and how everybody is material crazed. Shown in the lyrics below:
   "come down to the store, you can but some more more more"
   and:
   "out in front were the big machines, steel and rusty now I guess. out back was the river. That big sign down the road that's where is all started"
   one line doesn't fit in, and it suggests a regretted love.
   "only part that turned me on but he was candy all over"
   (what does it mean?)
