I agree with the other anonymous, a lot of people just pretend to like a certain type of music because it's deemed 'popular' at the time. I dunno if the song is highlighting this, if it is it's pretty ironic because most of the people it's making fun of actually use the song as some sort of credo hehe.

Actually, I believe this song is making fun of the Americans' view of popular music. This song is making fun of how a lot people think listening to unpopular music (indie rock n roll) is cool and how they think that the other people listening to popular music is uncool. Listen to the lines "I'm on drums, she's on tambourine" and "oh don't be shy, let's cause a scene."
