I think the song is about how life-long dreams of being something like a movie star, or a guitarist, or a professional athlete aren't as great as they seem to be.
The lyrics themselves seem to be the singer talking about how Hollywood is an awful place; very contrary to the popular view of it. He misses home because in Hollywood, there's no one there for him and everyone is ugly on the inside.
The places and jobs that people aspire to go to and have make people forget the important things like friends and family.
