I encourage people to watch the video They Sold Their Souls for Rock and Roll as well as Rock and Roll Sorcerers of the New Age Revolution,. The latter (really both), I believe gives an explanation of such obscure lyrics in Rock and Roll songs.

Margaritaville is the story of a distressed young man who loved and lost. The original recording's first line was wasting away in Margaritaville, not wasted away. The difference between the two is significant as the song progresses. There is a reference to EVE in the lyric "Some people say there's a woman to blame..." which has been problematic in our culture for centuries. The next time he refers to her he says the problem could be my fault. In the last reference to her He says it is my own Damn fault. There are numerous references to Biblical themes in the song, but is all covered up by a very catchy tune which is, of course, the secret of its success.
