Spade Lyrics

The beauty spot was borrowed
Now my sweet life rusts tomorrow
I'm a confession that is waiting to be heard

Burn your empty rain down on me
Whisper your death beat so softly
We bend our knees at the altar of my ego

You drained my heart, you made...

This song has to be about Rose McGowan.
It would’ve been around the area and currently someone want him she was like that as in draining life out of him

I definitely think it's about toxic romance, where the couple breaks up and gets back together many times, and the references to addiction are a metaphor for it. My interpretation, line-by-line:

The beauty spot was borrowed and
(She was the beauty in his life, but only temporarily)
Now my sweet knife rusts tomorrow.
(She ran off so all the things that remind him of her are now rusting, but he's so used to this they're knives even when sweet)
I'm a confession that is waiting to be heard.
(He's waiting for her to be honest and forthcoming about her feelings)
Burn your empty rain down on me
Whisper your death beat so softly
(Alternating between fights full of empty hostility and moments of passionate love)
    We bend our knees
At the altar of my ego
(His ego is a big problem in their relationship, but she also idolizes him)
    You drained my heart
    And made a spade
(She sucks everything out of him when she leaves, making him miserable and unable to love)
But there's still traces of me in your veins
(But she is addicted to him and will be back)
    You drained my heart
    And made a spade
But there's still traces of me
    in your veins
All my lilies' mouths are open
(Lillies are a symbol for sadness, or the branding of criminals, so this represents the memory of her, and possible tears)
Like they're begging for dope and hoping
(Comparing missing her to drug withdrawals)
    Their bitter petal chant,
"We can kick , you won't be back."
(But also realizing it may be better to stay apart, kick the addiction)
I'm a diamond that is tired
Of all the faces I've acquired
(Diamonds signify romantic commitment, he is sick of having relationships that follow this pattern)
    We must secure the shadow
    Ere the substance fades
(But you can't have meaningful love without the dark side of human emotion)
    You drained my heart
    And made a spade
But there's still traces of me
    in your veins
    You drained my heart
    And made a spade
But there's still traces of me
    in your veins
And we said 'til we die
    (Again, commitment. Perhaps even marriage.)
And we said 'til we die

    This song is about Heroin.

    Line for line lyric interpretation:

The beauty spot was borrowed and
    (The mark wasn't originally there)
Now my sweet knife rusts tomorrow.
(How a syringe gets bad with multiple uses)
I'm a confession that is waiting to be heard.
(You have to hide the Heroin use)
Burn your empty rain down on me
(You cook Heroin in a spoon before injecting)
Whisper your death beat so softly
(You are at peace but it can kill you)
    We bend our knees
    (Nodding out)
At the altar of my ego
    (You are invincible on Heroin)
    You drained my heart
(The next high was the only thing you care about)
    And made a spade
    (Made you numb to emotion)
But there's still traces of me
    (You are stuck...)
    in your veins
    (Because your body wants more)
    You drained my heart
    And made a spade
But there's still traces of me
    in your veins
All my lilies' mouths are open
    (Track marks/ needle hole)
    Like they're begging for dope
    (Constant reminders)
    And hoping
    (That unbearable craving)
    Their bitter petal chant,
(You can see the damage you're doing to yourself)
"We can kick , you won't be back."
(But no matter how many times you said this was your last time, you always used Heroin again)
I'm a diamond that is tired
    (I am Heroin)
Of all the faces I've acquired
(And I have killed many people)
    We must secure the shadow
(You have to feel that numbness)
    Ere the substance fades
    (Till you die)
    You drained my heart
    And made a spade
But there's still traces of me
    in your veins
    You drained my heart
    And made a spade
But there's still traces of me
    in your veins
And we said 'til we die
    (You give up fighting)
And we said 'til we die
(And eventually die because Heroin kills you)

I did not fully study the lyrics, but one think I am almost sure of is the line "You drained my heart, made a spade..." He fell in love, opened his heart to a woman, and she abused him until he became no more than a heartless best. Perhaps in the song he still believes she still loves him "But there's still traces of me in your veins", but her blood is probably in his knife already ;) .

I think this is just a reference to a garden. A bleeding heart is a plant, so it's like someone killed the plant. My second reason for thinking it's about a garden is of "and made a spade." A spade is a gardening tool, a pointy shovel. Also spades in a card deck originate from tarot when they were originally swords. Swords stab hearts, or cut bleeding ones. And "there's still traces of me in your veins". I think this is his strongest metaphor in the song. From the outside it looks like love and then having it broken, but I thought of it as veins of a plant. The blood (BLEEDING hearts) is contained in the veins. And the lines remind me of poet Fredrich Holderlin, who opened his own veins one day to 'water a rose tree.'
