   Rated 0 i think the story is about the end of a relationship , the title comes from the mans complete reversal of circumstances , we has once in love but now he is lonely, the desolation (i believe refering to misery/lonliness) he feels makes him feel cold inside.
   
   i think the chorus is what the woman tells the man as she is comforting him.
   
   the story of the priest describes what we should't do , the preist is lamenting (vocally expressing grief). seeing darkness and light in detail could mean that he can see both lonliness & love, but he has been overpowered by lonelyness (given himself over) and is refusing love (even though he knows it is real), whenever the chances of love comes along he turns it down (turning away from every meal, starving himself of goodness)
   
   
   in the end, the man(the witness) has overheard a boy say to his farther "what if i lost all that i had" , this has confused the man, he was in love but has now experienced loneliness (he's now seen them both in detail as the priest did) instead of being overpowered by the grief and giving up on love like the priest, he holds on to what he knows to be real (love) represented by walking up to the nearest girl, maybe she was lonely and he wanted to show her love (a whole new world) .
   
   if we look at the chorus the woman is telling the man that even thought they've broke up, if they don't give up on love then they will be alright even if breaking up makes them lonely for a while (though it's cold inside - refer to desolation in the first verse)
   
   i think the overall story tells us that if we have fell in love before then we know that it is real, if we don't turn our backs on it then we will be ok. otherwise we will be overcome by lonliness and starve ourselves of goodness in our lives.
