The meaning comes from both Mercury and May from a time where they struggled with their love lives. Mercury had gotten a second boyfriend while touring, when he brought him back, his original boyfriend was upset and wanted to break up. Mercury wanted it to work, he felt love for both of them, obviously it didn't work that way an d Mercury went through a rough time. At the same time, May was struggling with his marriage with Chrissie because he didn't love her the way he originally did because he fell in love with Anita Dobson, and had an affair for two years before leaving his wife.
This song's theme mentions 'it's hard to be true lovers together' and other lyrics that suggest an unhappiness in their lives and the difficulty with making things in life work.
