He had found an opportunity/piece of hope (the flower, which could represent a loved one) and founds out he found something he didn't know he needed.
The chorus could mean that he has lost someone he loved, and can no longer sleep without them, and if he ever does sleep he has a nightmare. He is pleading to hear the voice of the person that has left him.
The flower could be a symbol of the person he loved, of which he has uprooted and in consequence, has dried up and withered away. The loved one was not very happy to be with him, and he wishes he could undo things that he has done.
He tried to bring it back to life, (return this flower to the dirt) in an attempt to bring the person back/undo what has happen. He starts to wish he hadn't taken that flower, since he had ruined it, and he feels empty without it.
To him, this flower seemed like an angel, but not the average angel with wings and a halo, but different, someone who made him feel happy. He is brought home where the people he loved are, but he seems to think it is different.
There are many ways to interpret this song, but I felt like this was the most likely interpretation.
