First off, I think it needs to be said that this is a cover of a Dolly Parton song, but I think Jack may have purposely wanted this to have a bisexual undertone to it.

Basically it's just about someone pleading Jolene not to take their man away from them, because they know she is perfectly capable of doing so.

It's also implied that Jolene would only be motivated to take him away for her own sexual needs, but the singer is actually in love with him, which is why she doesn't want him to leave.

I think that he is talking about his best friend or good friend and Jolene is trying to separate them

This song is one of his ex-wife's (Meg) favorite songs. She asked him to sing the song, and he did. Nice imagination some of you have though.

Could Jolene be God, and the singer is begging for his life?

This was originally sung by Dolly Parton. So it is a girl in love begging another girl to let her have her only love. Since Jack had to get permission to cover the song, he could not be able to change the words. Jack is very strait for a famous person, being married to his wife Meg, who he had loved so much he took her last name. The real tragedy is Jack and Meg splitting up, thus ending The White Stripes.

I assumed it was JW's self conscious battling with Jolene.

Uh? since when has jolene been slang for cocaine?
    Never heard that one..
I think this song is pretty much what the lyrics say, that 'jolene' is beautiful (a reference to his wife, 'flaming locks of auburn hair') and the singer is scared because she could easily take her man, and she knows her man is begining to feel the same way ('he talks about you in his sleep')

I don't think that this is what Dolly had in mind when she did the song, but I think that when Jack did it, he was the guys dog. There is panting at the beginning of the song, and as he is the guy's dog, his entire life revolves around him.

The dog is understandably worried that his master will choose Jolene over him. The only hope he has is that Jolene will have mercy on him!
